Gun Reform

Recently, a disgruntled person again exposed Californians to yet another violent attack with easy access to guns. Who among us can ever be safe shopping at a mall, taking in a movie, sending our children to school? The incidents of multiple gun deaths have skyrocketed in our country because of a shameful lack of leadership. While the majority of citizens favor reasonable approaches to reducing many of these needless tragedies, politicians ignore the will of America, choosing instead to kowtow to wealthy lobbyists under the control of the NRA.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment and have absolutely no agenda that includes taking anyone’s legally obtained guns away. What I do favor is a logical, common sense approach that makes us safer by keeping dangerous assault weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill, deranged or violently unhinged zealots who inevitable strike out at innocents in an effort to seek revenge, make themselves famous or advance a political agenda that is unacceptable to most Americans.

The best way to accomplish this goal is to establish background checks and waiting periods for gun purchases in an attempt to isolate those who would use them as a tool of destruction. Do not fall prey to the incendiary rhetoric or scare tactics of anyone who takes money from the NRA or anyone who makes a profit from your fear. Congress has passed such a bill, but is lies on Mitch McConnell’s desk, languishing with no chance of being brought to the floor of the Senate for debate or vote. And, he readily accepts large amounts of money from gun lobbyists, so his motivation is clear.

Can we really be so cavalier and desensitized to the continuous massacre of innocent Americans, many of them children, that we cannot find a compromise? I will not be one of those people, not while I have the chance to stop it. #CA42Matters.
